Damascus-SANA

The late plastic artist Sawsan Jalal is one of the important artists in the contemporary Syrian plastic movement because she has her own artistic identity, especially in her selection of special topics such as roses and the Damascene house in a unique expressive style.

In appreciation of her rich and generous artistic career, which lasted for more than 44 years, the Ministry of Culture honored her during the celebration of the Syrian Plastic Art Days for the year 2021.

Sawsan graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Interior Architecture in 1977, and worked in the field of decoration and drawings for children’s stories. She waited a long time before holding her first exhibition at the Damascus National Museum in 1993 with the works of her father, the pioneering artist Mahmoud Jalal, and her brother, the artist Khaled.

As for Sawsan's first solo exhibition, it was in 1995 at Nasir Shura Gallery in 1995, in addition to her participation in many local and foreign group exhibitions.

During her artistic career, Sawsan possessed a personality independent of her father and brother and different from her fellow plastic artists. In addition, she excelled in teaching students of the Faculty of Architecture, which enabled her to perform the artistic message in an efficient manner based on her experience based on scientific foundations and rules.

The experience of the artist Sawsan witnessed variations in themes and stylistic and technical aspects, in addition to her distinction in addressing a topic related to the flowers of Damascus, documenting it through her exhibitions in a modern and contemporary way, away from the framework of traditional realism.

During her experience, Sawsan also embodied other themes related to faces, elements of nature and other forms.
