145,000 vaccinations against the coronavirus have so far been given in the vaccination center of the city of Regensburg.

For the one-year existence, a balance was drawn.

Regensburg - A year ago the vaccination center of the city of Regensburg * was opened on Dultplatz.

Now they took stock and gave an outlook on future plans.

Dr.

Richard Leberle, head of the Regensburg vaccination center, does not skimp on criticism of the Bavarian state government.

“Most of the time, the changes came on Friday afternoons,” he reports.

Of course, this did not do the necessary "continuity" in vaccination.

Vaccination Center Regensburg: Criticism of the Free State - Ordinances often "interesting and exciting"

Changes such as the temporary suspension of Astrazeneca vaccinations had come at short notice, mostly before the weekend, and had repeatedly thrown the plans overboard.

Dr.

Walter Boeckh, head of the municipal legal department.

Regulations issued by the Free State are often “interesting and exciting” to be observed, according to Boeckh.

The situation is "very volatile".

Police escorts were still necessary when the first vaccination doses arrived in Regensburg * in December 2020.

"We were afraid that someone would steal the vaccine," said Leberle.

And in general there was initially “too little vaccine for too many vaccinated people”.

In Regensburg this disproportion was particularly bad.

According to Leberle, the vaccination center had to take care of four clinics and a comparatively high number of residents, nursing staff, doctors and dentists in addition to normal operations.

Vaccination Center Regensburg: Up to 900 vaccinations daily

The quota was increased from initially 100 vaccinations per day to 700 to 900 by June 2021.

A total of 145,000 have now been administered - in the vaccination center itself, a branch in Königswiesen, the recently opened center in Greflingerstrasse and by mobile teams.

These include almost 25,000 booster vaccinations and 3,600 vaccinated children.

The vaccination quota in Regensburg is 75.5 percent (basic immunization).

35 percent of the population are additionally boosted.

Regensburg is thus above the national average (70 percent).

Leberle attributes this to, among other things, special “vaccination campaigns” that Regensburg started earlier than other cities.

There were vaccinations in the beer garden, in the evenings on Bismarckplatz or in the city park, offers at OTH and the university, moonshine vaccinations, a vaccination campaign with star chef Anton Schmaus or with the Prinzengarde.

In contrast to many others, Regensburg did not dismantle the vaccination centers in the summer, says Boeckh.

75 people work in the Regensburg vaccination center

In essence, it's all about "making everyone an offer," said Leberle.

That seems to be working.

In the last few weeks the demand has increased.

Instead of six to eight doctors, 15 are now on duty each.

A total of around 75 employees per shift are employed in the municipal vaccination centers.

According to Mayor Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer (SPD), the city has assigned a lot of staff, for example from disaster control or the fire brigade *, in order not to outsource too many tasks to third parties.

In addition, she thanks the auxiliary services - THW, Malteser, Johanniter and DLRG, which ensure the operation of the vaccination facilities.

According to the current arrangement, the vaccination center, which the city operates on behalf of the Free State, will remain in place until the end of April, according to Maltz-Schwarzfischer.

Or just as long "until there is a new message".

Disturbances in the vaccination center?

So far only drunk youngsters

The Regensburg Vaccination Center has not recorded any attacks by vaccine opponents or so-called lateral thinkers.

Apart from one or two attacks by drunk young people, there were no disturbances, said Leberle.

Vaccination opponents would contact the city mainly by email.

“That’s going more in my direction,” says the mayor.

The city replied to these letters, also “to correct the facts”.

Maltz-Schwarzfischer calls for continued use of the vaccination offers.

Especially if the omicron variant of the coronavirus * should continue to spread.

If the number doubles in a day or two - "like in London" - it gets "tricky". Only "together and in solidarity" can one "get out" of the pandemic.
