The time has come: The west bypass will be opened to traffic on Monday, January 10th, probably around 4 p.m.

Freising -

The key data of the mega project: The 3560 meter long route connects Thalhauser Straße (State Road 2084) / Weihenstephaner Ring directly with State Road 2350 (formerly Bundesstraße 11) / District Road FS 44 and thus leads through traffic around the city.

To relieve the residents, the district of Vötting will be driven under with a 705 meter long tunnel.

The project costs amount to around 139 million euros.

The Free State of Bavaria bears 70 percent of the eligible costs, the rest is shared between the city and the district of Freising.

Bavaria's Transport Minister Kerstin Schreyer emphasizes the importance of the western bypass for the city of Freising: "The western bypass gives the Freising citizens real relief." Less traffic means more quality of life, more safety and, in the long term, new development and design options for the city .

That is why the day of the road opening is “a great day for Freising”.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place six years ago

Review: On May 7, 2015, the groundbreaking ceremony was symbolic for the traffic project, which "together with the B 301 north-east bypass means an efficient bypass network around the city", as city hall spokeswoman Christl Steinhart emphasizes. With the start of the central construction work at the end of 2016 and the "tunnel stop", i.e. the dredging of the first earth load for the heart of the bypass on May 22, 2017, a construction period of around four years was initially expected. Due to unexpected geological conditions, the realization was extended to five years. Two connection areas, in the north the newly created roundabout on State Road 2084 in the area of the intersection of Weihenstephaner Ring, Griesfeld and Thalhauser Straße and in the south the connection to Angerstraße, have already been used:Construction site traffic in the new development area on Angerstrasse has been handled via the completed section of the western bypass since July 2020.

The festival is unfortunately canceled

Despite all the joy at and about the traffic release, which for Freising means the urgently needed relief from through traffic, the city regrets that “this milestone cannot be celebrated properly as planned.

Due to the tense pandemic situation, the opening of traffic cannot be celebrated together with the interested population and in particular with the residents who were heavily burdened during the construction period in a public ceremony - as it was always planned, ”said Steinhart.

After all, the west bypass is the largest infrastructure project in the city of Freising and was included in the land use plan for the first time in the 1970s as a goal for effective traffic relief.

The connection to Angerstrasse was completed in July 2020.

"Premiere ride" in the video

Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher and the city administration would have liked to have presented the route in advance at an “open house”.

Various actions were prepared to thoroughly inspect the tangent and the tunnel.

Steinhart: "The pandemic did not and unfortunately does not allow the ideas to be implemented and invited to an on-site meeting." The city of Freising is therefore showing the route in a video before it goes into operation and hopes that the drone recordings and the tracking shot through the tunnel will be exciting Offering insights and outlooks.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Tunnel video seen on all channels

The video is expected to go online on Friday, January 7, 2022, around noon and can then be accessed on the website of the City of Freising at www.freising.de/leben-wohnen/westtangente and on the city's social media channels Facebook at www. facebook.com/Freising.de and YouTube, www.youtube.com/user/stadtfreising.
