Double Profit: Kosher Restaurants Celebrating New Year | Israel today

2021-12-24T06:25:29.715Z

In the shadow of the new-old fear of restrictions, Israeli restaurants are planning especially delicious foreign year-end celebrations • And what do kosher keepers do who cannot go out to a restaurant on a Friday night? Exactly the same, but double • And also: end-of-year meals in kosher restaurants - the full list

If we put aside for a moment the fear of overcoming the omicron that could lead to new-old restrictions on restaurants, it seems that the culinary scene intends to mark the arrival of 2022 in a particularly solemn way, one that will also make up for last year, when we all celebrated New Year's Eve with plastic cases.

Within those celebrations of the end of the foreign year, a new sub-niche is emerging that is growing and is New Year celebrations in kosher restaurants.

This year, when the official New Year's celebrations and the transition to the new year take place on the night between Friday and Saturday, it seems that the owners of the seemingly kosher restaurants have lost a very economical day, but in practice the situation seems to be quite the opposite.

"In recent years, the phenomenon of New Year's Eve events has crossed borders, and reached kosher restaurants as well, so that even a traditional kosher audience, and even kippah wearers, religious and ultra-Orthodox alike, can find New Year's celebrations at special events held at those kosher restaurants," say Eli Hellman and Yossi. Ettinger, directors of the "Detilishes" training culinary community.

"However," they emphasize, "this is not a celebration of the event as a 'festival' or holiday, similar to the holidays in the Jewish calendar, but as an opportunity for a culinary celebration and a special menu not found in routine restaurants. When the emphasis in these meals is sometimes on the "show" and the design no less than on the flavors. "

"We must not forget that financially this is also a real opportunity for restaurants, which usually price meals at a peak price per person that significantly exceeds the prices of" regular "meals in the restaurant and alcohol, which is known to be a significant share of profits in restaurants, spills like water at end-of-year meals. This is reflected in the fact that some of the kosher restaurants closed on Saturdays open their restaurants this year, especially on the occasion of the date, which falls this year on the night between Saturday and Sunday. "

Not just for the religious

So, as you already understand, kosher restaurants celebrate twice, the end of the year on Thursday and the beginning of the new on Saturday night, and it pays off both for diners, who eventually earned another day of culinary celebration, and for restaurateurs, as the restaurants, for the most part, are full. Also due to the high demand that always exists but also as compensation for last year.

"This year's New Year's Eve falls on a Friday," said chef Guy Peretz from the Greek Salon restaurant in Tel Aviv.

"But since we are kosher we feel we have been given the opportunity to celebrate twice and thus give an option to as many diners as possible to enjoy all the specials and dishes of the end-of-year menu."

The restaurant headed by Peretz is planning a festive Greek menu with mazets, fresh fish, ouzo which he promises will "flow like water" and of course, a festive tavern, but only one thing can obscure the celebration.

"The preparations in our kitchens are already at their peak, raw materials from Greece on the way here, and between the preparations and the preparations we only pray that no restrictions will be imposed, it will be a very serious injury."

"As a kosher restaurant, we also offer an alternative to kosher and Shabbat observers, but also in general to people who do not necessarily like to celebrate on that day," says Eli Fischer, director of the Cafe Hanoi restaurant and the Mosho bar.

"This year we see a really high demand for celebrations among our customers, even if it is not on the same day, it has nothing to do with the religious event but the desire to celebrate.

Also in hotels

Another great option facing the kosher celebrants comes from the kosher hotels, or those where the kosher restaurants are located.

Many of them have a festive weekend break, which includes, among other things, the same festive meal on Thursday alongside other activities at the hotel itself throughout the weekend.

At the West Side restaurant at the Royal Beach Hotel in Tel Aviv, for example, the gala dinner on Saturday night is the finale of "New Year's Eve" which begins on Thursday.

"The restaurant's audience is young, both secular and traditional, people who want to celebrate the end of the year properly," says Eitan Mizrahi, S., Isrotel Hotels in Tel Aviv.

We are ready with a reinforced team in honor of this weekend and already 80% of the places have been booked. "

At the Mamilla Hotel in Jerusalem, they took the experience one step further.

"In Jerusalem, the festive atmosphere begins at Christmas, which is seen in the east of the city. In addition to the culinary aspect, our hotel guests also enjoy tours of the Old City, where the symbols of the holiday stand out, the atmosphere of Europe and Israel. "Winter treatments are also offered in a holistic complex. What more is needed?"
