Los Angeles police officers accidentally killed a 14-year-old girl while measuring clothes in a locker room, in pursuit of a suspect in the assault of a woman, city officials said. Police also killed the suspect, whose name and the girl's name were not released by police. The woman who was attacked earlier was evacuated to a hospital in moderate to severe condition.

The shots were fired around 11:45 a.m. at a store in the Burlington chain in the North Hollywood area of the San Fernando Valley. Captain Stacey Spell, of the Los Angeles Police Department, said at a news conference that police initially responded to calls about a man being attacked by a deadly weapon and reports of gunfire. Mug said officers opened fire when they saw the suspect assaulting another person. According to Mug, the suspect was hit by the shooting and killed. He said there had been previous reports of a man behaving strangely.

Los Angeles Police Department deputy chief Dominic Choi said one of the bullets penetrated a wall of a new dresser and hit a 14-year-old girl. The police later found her inside. "You can't see through the locker rooms and they look like a regular wall," Choi said at another news conference. He said investigators no longer know if the girl was in the cell before the violence began or if she fled the scene to hide from her.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta said the state Department of Justice has opened an investigation into the incident. Choi said authorities do not know what the motive of the suspect is or whether he knew the woman he assaulted in the store. It is not clear if the woman was injured by gunfire, but Choi noted that she was suffering from injuries to her head, arms and face. Police found a metal lock near the suspect, and he may have used it during the attack.

Imelda Garcia said her sister works at the store, and she was on a break when she heard the shots and saw everyone running.

Garcia said she spoke to her sister on the phone and that she was in good condition, but she sounded "very stressed."

Police escorted people outside the store nearly two hours after the shooting.

In 2018 a similar incident occurred in the city, when police officers accidentally shot and killed a woman during an exchange of gunfire with an armed man who took hostages.
