The White House announced today the lifting of travel restrictions that it imposed on eight countries in southern Africa last month due to concerns about the rapid spread of the Omicron mutant.
Reuters quoted White House spokesman Kevin Minos as saying, “US President Joe Biden will lift the temporary travel restrictions imposed on southern African countries,” considering that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended the decision because the current anti-Corona vaccines are effective against Omicron, especially after the booster dose of the vaccine.
The official also attributed the decision to the consideration that international travelers from African countries will not have a noticeable impact on the number of infections in the United States after the widespread spread of the Omicron mutant in it.
Washington had prevented arrivals from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi from entering the US territory after the Omicron mutant was first discovered in South Africa and later spread to a number of countries.
