The defendant Chen Jialin (37 years old) was charged with three counts of soliciting benefits from an agent. He alleged that on October 22 last year, as a volunteer of the district councillor Xie Shuzhen, he separately filed a complaint with the business involved in a leasing dispute in an industrial building. The owner, tenant and real estate agent each ask for 800 Hong Kong dollars, a total of 2,400 Hong Kong dollars, as remuneration for assisting in the settlement of the three-person rental dispute.

Since she knew that the defendant was a police officer, she hoped that the defendant would use her years of policing experience to give advice. Later, she was told by the tenant to ask for payment. However, she never allowed the defendant to receive payment, and the services provided by her office were free of charge.

Xie also pointed out that although she knew that the defendant was mentally ill, she did not realize that his behavior was different when she got along with him, and she believed that his thoughts and answers were clear.
The defendant asked during cross-examination that the case was a complicated rental dispute. If it can be resolved successfully, would it be worth charging 800 yuan?
Xie said that it is difficult to evaluate whether it is worth it, because the price is determined by both parties, but emphasized that the service of the office will not be charged.
