The shortage of auto parts, due to the corona plague, caused a significant 43% increase in car thefts this year compared to 2020 and the trend is expected to continue in 2022, according to a study by Ituran on car thefts.

In 2021, at the top of the list of stolen vehicles continued to be the jeeps and jeeps that accounted for 40% of all thefts.

This is an increase of 8% compared to 2020. Gush Dan continues to lead the theft table with 34 percent.

The study was conducted according to a national sample of 650,000 vehicles.

It also emerged that in 2021, car thieves focused on moving stolen vehicles through security breaches.

The vehicles were smuggled to the cities of Ramallah, Qalqilya and Tulkarm, which are located near the center of the country and are used by the thieves as refugee cities for the stolen vehicle.

It was further determined that the corona caused a shortage of spare parts and therefore there was a significant increase in vehicle thefts.

As mentioned, in analyzing the thieves' favorite areas, Gush Dan continues to lead the theft table in Israel with 34% of all theft incidents.

After Gush Dan are the Sharon region with 30%, the southern region with 12%, the Shephelah region with 8%, Jerusalem with 6%, the northern region with 7% and Judea and Samaria with 3%.

In 21% of the theft incidents, the thief has the key to the vehicle.

In 32% of all cases - the thief tried to break into the car violently.

In 29% of cases the thief tried to connect to the computer socket.

In 8% of cases, an attempt is made to load or tow the vehicle.

In 3% of cases the vehicle is robbed of its owner or the key remains in the vehicle.

Whereas in 7% of cases it was not possible to determine how the vehicle was stolen.

As noted, the vehicles with the highest incidence of attempted theft in 2021 were again the Jeeps and Jeeps in 40 percent of cases.

Private vehicles in 26 percent of cases, motorcycles in 21 percent, commercial vehicles in 8 percent, trucks in 3 percent and vehicles (mechanical engineering equipment) - 2%.

Nir Sheretsky, CEO of Ituran, said that in 2021 the company led to the arrest of 183 squads suspected of vehicle theft, an increase of 52% compared to 2020. According to him, the arrests prevented the theft of 12,444 vehicles within a year.
