A total of 27 migrants died this Friday in the wreck of two boats in the Aegean Sea, reports the Greek coast guard.
The week thus ends with three such incidents in Greek waters, which have caused 30 victims.
The coast guard has recovered 16 bodies, including that of a child, and has rescued 63 people who were traveling in a precarious boat with 80 passengers near the island of Paros. A few hours earlier, another shipwreck had caused 11 deaths among the hundreds of migrants traveling in another boat, north of the island of Antikythera. The survivors, including 27 children, have been evacuated. The search for bodies and rescue operations will continue, a spokesman for the Greek coast guard has explained to the AFP agency, as it is not clear how many people were traveling on the ship.
These incidents are in addition to Wednesday's, when at least three migrants died after an inflatable canoe capsized along the island of Folegandros, also in southern Greece.
Dozens of passengers on the boat are still missing.
Unhcr, the United Nations Refugee Agency, estimates that more than 2,500 people have died or disappeared at sea in an attempt to reach the shores of Europe between January and November this year.
In the last week, more than 160 people disappeared in Mediterranean waters when two precarious vessels chartered by Libyan mafias dedicated to smuggling people to Europe wrecked.
