Was an intention to harm Queen Elizabeth thwarted at Christmas thwarted?
An alleged serious security breach occurred on Saturday morning when an armed man was arrested after breaking into the Windsor Castle complex near London, where the Queen is located.
Police confirmed the man was apprehended while wearing "offensive weapons" but was arrested before entering the castle buildings.
Police said Queen Elizabeth had received an update on the case and noted that the investigation was ongoing.
"The man was arrested on suspicion of unauthorized entry to a protected site and possession of offensive weapons," police added.
"Security procedures were activated within moments from the moment he entered the castle compound, and he did not enter any building."
The Queen has been at the castle for many months, and this year contrary to tradition established at the Royal House, she did not spend Christmas at her holiday estate in Sandringham.
Instead, Regent Prince Charles and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla, joined her at the castle along with her son Edward and his family.
At the castle she also filmed the traditional Christmas speech, which aired at 3pm on Saturday (UK time), for the first time since her husband Prince Philip passed away.
