The number of infections is alarmingly high, and Omikron is also on the rise in Germany.
A virologist explains what we can do to get through the holidays safely.
Munich - "Every year again" this year some people think and look at the Corona values shortly before the holidays. But even with the Omikron variant, there are measures with which we can make Christmas safer. Dr. Jana Schroeder explained in an interview with
RTL
that Omikron has a lighter potential for infection. The doubling time is also "incredibly fast".
Although everything looks like Omikron has an easier course, especially in younger age groups, the high number of infections counteracts this effect if you look at the variant on a social level.
The government only promised closer contact restrictions for after Christmas.
"If it weren't for Christmas now, these measures would be introduced sooner," the virologist suspects.
Virologist: This is how the corona risk can be reduced at Christmas
So what can be done to get through the contemplative time of the year with as little risk as possible? Schroeder has a few suggestions. “The good news is that you can do a lot of things to minimize the risk of infection and you should take advantage of them,” she explains. “One factor is to be vaccinated three times,” says Schroeder. It is also helpful "to have already reduced the number of contacts".
Anyone who has not yet taken these measures can still do specific things at Christmas.
“It is important that you watch out for small groups, that you ventilate well, and don't forget the toilet, for example.
You could see that at the soccer World Cup that there were contagions even in such small rooms.
You should also test beforehand, but with the knowledge that these tests do not provide 100 percent certainty. "
Corona crisis at Christmas: take symptoms of illness seriously
“It is also important to watch out for symptoms,” the virologist continues.
“Every sign of a cold can be a clue.
You cannot tell from the symptoms whether it is Covid or not. "
Even without lockdown, there are a few rules to follow.
In Bavaria, for example, the mask requirement continues to apply, while 2G prevails in gastronomy.
You can find all measures here.
So there are all sorts of measures with which Christmas is not only contemplative, but also a bit safer for you and your loved ones.
