Mittenwald - "Warning - tree falls" was the motto recently on Kalvarienberg.
Exactly ten times the trees marked by the Mittenwald Forest Administration on behalf of the Bavarian State Forests crashed onto the access road to the valley station of the Kranzberg chairlift at the height of the "Vogelherd".
"The felled trees endangered traffic safety," explains district manager Martin Echter, "because the stony ground is very unstable and brittle, the trees could have fallen onto the road". This was discovered during an inspection by Echter with the head of the civil engineering office Verena Hornsteiner and an external geologist. "Twice a year we check all the roads that directly border the state forest," says Echter, "and we decide which trees need to be cut down".
The felling work was done by the head of operations, Sepp Brandner, with the two forestry apprentices Klement Weber from Graswang and Hansi Kiegl from Wackersberg.
Josef Schöpf and his tractor with a cable winch ensured that the sawn trees all fell in the right direction and could be sawn on the spot.
The building yard employees Georg Seitz and Anton Karner had taken over the barriers.
As a result of the campaign, around ten stars of wood were collected, which were sold to the beneficiaries.
Since the action was over after around five hours in the early afternoon, Echter was satisfied with the efforts of the men, "so it was only a small window of time for the residents concerned in which they could not use the street".
