The Wildsteig community wants to invest in social life: A village shop with a lunch menu, a doctor's practice and barrier-free apartments are planned for a new building.

At the beginning of the year the project was still stalled, but now the ideas are becoming more concrete.

Wildsteig - at the beginning of the year Josef Taffertshofer still sounded very sad.

After Rottenbuch had decided to build a supermarket on Bundesstrasse 23, the Wildsteiger mayor feared that this could be the death knell for his own plans for a village shop.

But there is no more pessimism to be heard, the town hall chief and council are pushing ahead with their major “village shop” project.

“It's going very well with us,” says Taffertshofer.

“We hope that it will go online in 2023.” The community has joined a Germany-wide network of village shops, benefits from the experiences of others and is getting advice.

So the Wildsteiger project gradually became more concrete.

The first draft is already available

According to Taffertshofer, there is a first draft for the new building. It is to be built on Riedstrasse instead of the building in which the bakery is located. The house, which according to the mayor can no longer be renovated, will instead be torn down. The new building is planned to be made of wood. A photovoltaic system is supposed to supply the building with its own electricity. This is also used for the groundwater heat pump, which is installed as a heater. "The conditions here are ideal for this," says Taffertshofer. The house should be as self-sufficient as possible. “We want to set an example when it comes to climate protection.” Therefore, in connection with the construction, a filling station for electric vehicles will be created near the building. "With a modern appearance."

With the project, the community also wants to do something for social life.

Because on the total of 900 square meters of usable space, in addition to the village shop, handicapped-accessible apartments, a doctor's practice and rooms for other health offers are to be created.

The lunch menu, which is created in the context of the village shop, is also very important - also as a meeting place.

No 24-hour shopping opportunities

However, after consultation with other village shop operators, the Wildsteiger had to say goodbye to one idea: There will be no opportunity to go shopping for 24 hours, as Taffertshofer initially imagined.

Because even if there is no need for sales staff, you would need security staff who regularly check that everything is in order.

“It's too time-consuming,” says Taffertshofer, who expects the plans for the project to be ready in the coming year.

"We are on a good way."
