An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted the southern Greek island of Crete today, but no casualties or damage were reported.
The Institute of Geodynamics in Athens said today in a statement that the tremor that hit the east of the island was at a depth of 9 kilometers, and the tremor was felt by the inhabitants of Crete and the islands of Karpathos, Kasos, Rhodes and Santouri.
The institute indicated that another quake measuring 4 on the Richter scale struck west of the capital, Athens, at a depth of 16.7 km.
Earthquakes are common in Greece due to its proximity to the meeting points of the African and Eurasian tectonics.
