In the “Historic Tavern” series, we present former Geretsried restaurants.

Today: Old Austria in the south of Geretsried.

Geretsried - If the description “legendary” applies to a restaurant, then it is the Tschannerl (or Old Austria) restaurant on Sudetenstrasse.

Lush balls and parties were celebrated in the large hall of the restaurant.

For a long time it was the social center in the south of Geretsried.

According to the historical Geretsried working group, the inn was located in a building of the former fire brigade of the armaments factory of Deutsche Sprengchemie.

Their facilities included an approximately 20 meter high hose tower, an accommodation building and four spacious garages for the fire engine and the technical equipment.

At the end of the 1940s, the butcher's shop and the Tschannerl restaurant, which was later expanded, were located in the team building and in the garage wing.

In the commemorative publication for the founding of the Geretsried community in 1950, an advertisement referred to the home-style lunch menu in the “Gaststätte und Fleischerei” by Karl Tschannerl (formerly Tschannerl Tachau in the Sudetenland).

According to advertisements, there were hot and cold dishes at any time of the day, well-kept drinks and their own cooling system.

Numerous associations met in the restaurant - including the VdK, which held its general meeting there on November 9, 1959 in the presence of the then mayor Karl Lederer.

Sometime in the 1960s, Raul and Tula Pavlicek leased the restaurant - previously they had run Café Adler in Stein together with Josef and Lydia Pavlicek.

“We children were often there in the restaurant,” remembers Manuela Pavlicek-Hundsdorfer.

The inn was on the first floor, and a huge hall on the first floor.

“Ballet lessons, carnival celebrations and weddings also took place there,” says the Geretsriederin.

“There was a lot going on in the hall.” The cooking was German-Yugoslavian with an Austrian twist.

Rare example: Exterior views of old Austria are few and far between.

Eva-Maria Rühling earned a few marks in addition in old Austria, as a kitchen and cleaning help. “I worked there with my girlfriend on the weekend,” says the 66-year-old who spent part of her childhood in Geretsried. It started on Saturday morning at 7 a.m. "Then I first had to clean and wipe the whole dining room." Then the dirty dishes waited in the kitchen. “Back then everything was washed off by hand,” the senior citizen remembers. The girl stood by the sink until late in the afternoon. The program was repeated on Sunday. "I got 25 marks for the weekend, that was a lot of money," says the Wolfratshauser.

Once the girl and her friend went crazy. After a big party, the teenagers were assigned to clean up the hall. “We started scrubbing the floor,” Rühling recalls. “We were thirsty and realized that the bar wasn't locked.” The girls tried the egg liqueur, the cherry liqueur and the whiskey. “We put all the bottles on once and were of course full of stars,” says the Wolfratshauser with a laugh. “When we were finished, we hung up and wiggled home.” This experience was pretty lasting. Rühling: "I haven't drunk alcohol for decades."

Michael Gänßbauer could not be tempted with liqueur. But with wheat beer and rock music, which was played in the great hall on Fridays and Saturdays. “Somebody hung up, his name was Foxi,” remembers the former Geretsrieder, who was a regular visitor to old Austria as a young man. “It was on a pedestal with a record player. Today you would say disc jockey. ”The speakers played“ progressive music ”, like the songs of Dire Straits that were not played in the powder keg disco. “That was my style of music.” On Friday it was always busier than on Saturday. "You paid a few marks downstairs and got a beer upstairs for it," the 62-year-old looks back.

After a few years, Raul and Tula Pavlicek gave up old Austria.

They leased the Bibisee restaurant in Königsdorf-Wiesen.

According to hearsay, a couple of Greek brothers took over the place.

It is impossible to understand when the economy closed its doors forever.

All that is known is that the building was demolished in 1992.
