The Spanish authorities announced the end of the volcanic eruption at the Cumbria Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands after setting a record for the longest eruption.

"After 85 days and 8 hours, the volcano has subsided," local media quoted Julio Perez, a spokesman for the authorities in the Canary Islands, as saying.

The volcano erupted 85 days ago, destroying dozens of homes and green spaces and forcing about 7,000 people to flee their homes, as lava devoured entire towns and neighborhoods.

According to the European Union's Copernicus Emergency Management Service, about 3,000 buildings were destroyed by lava, which swept 1,223 hectares of land.

Despite the long reconstruction process that awaits the residents of those areas, the news of confirming the end of the eruption, which came after 10 days without recording any volcanic activity, was a cause for relief, so that the island’s residents could return to their lives normally after their suffering as a result of the volcano’s release of lava, rocks and ash on course of days.
