REPORT - The leading French port in terms of goods traffic, handling nearly three million containers per year, the city is also the main gateway for cocaine to the territory.

Special envoy to Le Havre

At the foot of cranes which stretch out their squat arms towards a leaden sky, the marine mastodons crumbling under the burden land and set off in an almost impeccable ballet.

Sometimes as tall as the Eiffel Tower, they wait, like languid in the sticky lapping of the port, for the riders to unload the mountains of goods which have just crossed the oceans.

One by one, the containers, 20 to 40 feet long, are dropped off at the quayside and join a maze of “boxes” wisely aligned.

The metallic scrub stretches as far as the eye can see.

On each terminal, the esoteric noria is played without respite, behind high gates protected with barbed wire and bristling with cameras, with “restricted access” areas keeping barges and unwelcome visitors far away.
