Acclaimed film director Jean-Marc Vallée - who directed the 2013 drama "Dallas Buyers Club" - died Sunday near Quebec City, Canada, the publicist for his production company told CNN.

He was 58 years old.

"He was a friend, a creative partner and an older brother to me," Nathan Ross, a partner at Vallée's production company Crazyrose, said in a statement.

"The teacher will be sorely missed, but it is comforting to know that his beautiful style and the impactful work he shared with the world will still be alive."

The director began working on Canadian short films and music videos, before making his feature film debut with the French film "Liste noire", also known by its English title "Black List."

His breakthrough film in the United States was "Dallas Buyers Club," the 2013 film based on the true story of an AIDS patient who becomes a distributor of experimental treatments.

Although Vallée's direction was not recognized by the Academy, the film was nominated for Best Picture, while leads Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto each won Oscars for their performances.

Jean-Marc Vallée entered television production in 2017 as an executive producer of the HBO drama "Big Little Lies."

He also directed the entire first season of the series, winning an Emmy.

Later, Vallée was executive producer of the series "Sharp Objects", also for HBO, and directed all the episodes.

Vallée and Ross had signed a new development deal with HBO in April, according to Deadline.

Vallée said in a 2019 video for The Hollywood Reporter that he was very careful about selecting the projects he was willing to accept.

"Choosing your movie is choosing your lifestyle," Vallée said.

"Are you going to be happy waking up in the morning, doing this and living for this?"
