On the occasion of the Tree Day, the Homs Agriculture Directorate carried out a afforestation campaign today on the Homs-Damascus road, planting 2,000 forest plants of various types on an area of 30 dunums.
Engineer Younis Hamdan, Director of Agriculture, said that two thousand plantations of cypress, pine and azadracht were planted at the Kfaraya node on the Homs-Damascus road, with the aim of expanding the vegetation cover due to its environmental and economic importance.
Hamdan added that 20 hectares have been planted so far as part of the current afforestation plan, which includes planting 140 hectares of various types of forest, including 60 hectares of new areas, and the rest patching and renewing areas affected by fires and encroachments.
For his part, Engineer Faraj al-Mahmoud, head of the forestry department in the directorate, confirmed that the plants prepared for sale and distribution this year amount to 815,000 plants of various types, some of which are recycled from past years, while the plants are distributed to government institutions for free.
The area of natural and artificial forests in Homs Governorate is 51 thousand hectares.
