The ten most expensive climate disasters this year caused more than $170 billion in damage, an increase of $20 billion compared to the previous year 2020, according to a British charitable organization.

The British charity Christian Aid warned in a report published today and quoted by AFP that this upward trend reflects "the effects of human-caused climate change," pointing out that the first ten disasters also led to the death of at least 1,570 people and the displacement of about 1.3 million from their homes.

The organization explained in its report that its assessments mainly cover climate disasters in rich countries that have better infrastructure because it is difficult to estimate the financial losses caused by disasters in poor countries.

The organization pointed out that Hurricane Ida, which hit the eastern United States, came at the top of the list of natural disasters this year as the most costly, causing losses of about 65 billion dollars, followed by the deadly floods in Germany and Belgium in July, whose losses amounted to 43 billion dollars.

Other disasters that have left billions of dollars in damages include floods in Canada, a late spring frost in France and a cyclone that hit India and Bangladesh in May.
