In Saint-Aubin-lès-Elbeuf (Seine-Maritime), Mondial Auto is investing 2.4 million euros to be the only center in the West to recycle

According to the statements of the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron, by 2030, manufacturers will have to produce two million electric cars.

Once put into circulation on the roads, they will suffer, like thermals, breakdowns and accidents.

A chain of repair, recycling and destruction must therefore be put in place.

On 7 ha, one of the largest parks in France and Europe, Mondial Auto has launched a 2.4 million euros upgrading and equipment program.

It will be the only center approved in the West to recycle electric, water and later hydrogen cars, with an innovative approach.

By 2023, Mondial Auto's fleet will receive 6,500 vehicles.

Founded in 1992 by Francis Rivas, a former metrology specialist at Renault Cléon, Mondial Auto covers 1.7 hectares and receives 2,400 so-called thermal cars every year, collected from private individuals, damaged and declared as wreck or bought back from dealers.

From there, “they are recorded, made safe, neutralized by disconnecting the battery, cleaned of fluids by suction and disassembled.

Then the spare parts are resold in our store or shipped to France and also for export.

Finally, the carcasses are crushed and sent to a crusher, ”explains Francis Rivas, the director.

Ultimately, 6,500 vehicles will be able to be processed

About fifteen specialists are involved throughout this technical chain, “because over the years, cars have evolved with more electronics, more plastics and different metals. The profession has evolved. We are a long way from the days of Max and the scrap metal workers, the time of breakages where customers used themselves ”, adds the founder. And it is not over, because he has decided to follow the progress and respond to innovation.

The transformation of the park began in 2018. First, with the purchase of an additional 5.3 ha “already brought up to standard at the request of the Dreal

(Regional Directorate for the Environment, Development and Housing)

by the complete concreting of the surface, the installation of a rainwater treatment unit and another for contaminated water, and the installation of a complete fire defense ”, explains Cheikh Seck, the environment and safety manager of the society.

A few weeks ago, the elevation of a building of 1,800 m2 and another of 980 m2 “to serve as a sorting area under shelter and for vehicles with high risk of pollution such as burnt cars or vehicles began a few weeks ago. severely damaged.

We will also be able to secure the batteries of electric and hybrid cars, ”adds the technician.

Ultimately, 6,500 vehicles will be able to be processed by the center in a multipurpose unit: “We will be able to continue processing heat engines, but also electrics and hybrids.

They are characterized above all by the removal of accumulators which do not currently have a recycling channel.

So we have to isolate them safely.

Then, following a new procedure, the engine will be tested, along with the other parts, to be resold, ”says Francis Rivas.

And, he still foresees more with hydrogen "for which we will adapt.

LPG cars have been treated well for years.

We will know how to do it!
