They sell jam, pendants, and lanterns.

With the money they earn, the Neubiberger schoolgirls support young cancer patients.

Neubiberg

- They are also strong together.

Seven pupils from the 8th grade of the Neubiberg grammar school have really worked hard for a good cause in the last few weeks, for example cooking baked apple and speculoos jam and making necklaces, lanterns and Christmas tree pendants.

These things were sold to the teachers at two schools, right in the staff room.

They also offered waffles in the school yard during breaks, dusted them with powdered sugar or coated them with nougat cream.

Unit price: between 1.50 euros and 2 euros.

"The rush took us completely by surprise, we couldn't keep up with the orders," says Ida proudly and laughingly says: "Sometimes we got into a skid."

"We didn't expect that much"

With her friends Luisa, Jette, Johanna, Theresa, Ana and Julia, she has now earned over 1500 euros with the campaign. "We didn't expect that much, at most 500 euros or so," says Ida. The money is now to be transferred to the children's cancer ward at the University Hospital in Augsburg by the end of the school year. Why only then? "Because you can still donate until then," says Jette. Under the intended purpose “Together against cancer”, the name of the project, further funds are supposed to come together in the account of the high school.

In the long run, only power helps.

The initiative came about as part of a “project workshop” that the Neubiberg grammar school first introduced at the beginning of the new school year.

For these two lessons per week have been set aside on the timetable.

Actually for a project that the students should go through on their own.

Actually.

Because the seven girls, who have all known each other for a long time, got permission from the school management to work across classes.

And since there was a cancer case among friends, the topic was quickly found.

The school management was flexible

But wanting is one thing, carrying it out is another. "We had actually planned a stand at Christmas markets - at SV Perlach and at the Neubiberg elementary school - but like all other markets, they were canceled due to Corona," says Johanna. So now it was time to reschedule.

The school management was flexible. After the students had made their project attractive to the teachers at the Kirchheimer Gymnasium (Johanna: "That was really exciting"), they made their classrooms available for the stands and, above all, bought a lot themselves. The waffle stand in the playground in Neubiberg was also approved quickly - so we could start. In general, the students are full of praise for their teachers: "They were really flexible there, and if necessary, we were allowed to leave class earlier," says Ida.

The charitable commitment will not only benefit the young patients in the cancer ward.

"This campaign has also brought us a lot," agree the seven students.

“We were fully responsible, we had to organize everything on our own - and we found out that we can really do it,” says Johanna.

This strengthens self-confidence - and also promotes a sense of community.

Ida: "We could rely on each other, if something got stuck somewhere, we always helped each other."
