Almost 1,400 people receive incorrect covid test results in Australia
A covid-19 testing center in Sydney, Australia, admitted on Monday that it had issued incorrect PCR test results for covid to 1,395 people since December 22.
SydPath, operated by Hospital de San Vicente, said it sent negative SMS results to 995 people who underwent the test on December 23 and 24, even though their PCR tests had not been processed.
The hospital detected the error during an investigation into how another 400 people who underwent smears on December 22 and 23 received a negative result despite being positive for COVID-19.
"We have identified what happened and can confirm that it was related to a specific human error. SydPath has put procedures in place to ensure this does not happen again," SydPath wrote in a statement.
"We sincerely regret this mistake and acknowledge the significant impact it has had on those involved."
The errors occurred when Australia reported 10,186 new cases of covid-19 on Monday, a record since the start of the pandemic and the first time that new infections exceeded 10,000 across the country in a single day.
