After more than 30 charred bodies were found in eastern Myanmar, the UN has called for an investigation into the incident. UN Vice-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, said he was "appalled" at the credible reports of an attack on civilians in Kayah state. "I condemn this serious incident and all attacks on civilians across the country." Griffiths called on the Myanmar authorities to "immediately initiate a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident."

The bodies were found in three burned-out vehicles in the Hpruso community.

Photos of the wrecks were posted on online networks on Saturday.

The Myanmar Witness Observatory said 35 people, including children and women, were "burned and killed by the military on December 24th."

A rebel representative also accused the army of killing the people.

Two NGO employees go missing

The NGO "Save the Children" announced on Saturday that two of its employees had been missing since the incident.

"We have confirmation that your private vehicle was attacked and set on fire," the organization said.

A junta spokesman, Zaw Min Tun, said clashes broke out in Hpruso on Friday after soldiers tried to stop seven "suspicious" cars.

Several people were killed, the spokesman said without giving details.

Judgment against Aung San Suu Kyi postponed again

After a brief phase of democratization in Myanmar, the military came back to power in a coup in February.

Protests have raged across the country since then, killing more than 1,300 people, including children, and arresting more than 10,000.

Aung San Suu Kyi, the disempowered de facto head of government, is among those arrested.

More than 20 rebel groups are fighting the military in the country.

Another verdict against Suu Kyi expected on Monday has been postponed again.

The judge at the ruling military junta's special court in Naypyidaw adjourned to January 10 in the case alleging Suu Kyi of illegally importing and possessing radio equipment.

This was reported by the news agencies Reuters and AFP.

Suu Kyi was deposed in February after a military coup.

The now ruling junta covered them with a series of accusations.

The allegation about the radios goes back to a house search during the coup.

Security forces stormed her home and found her in possession of illegal equipment, according to the authorities.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate had already been sentenced to four years in prison at the beginning of December for inciting rioting against the military and violating corona requirements.

The military junta reduced the sentence to two years a few hours later.

Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing announced that she will be under house arrest in the capital, Naypyidaw.
