According to the National Report on Food Loss and Rescue, about 50% of all lost food - 1.1 million tons worth NIS 6.4 billion - is salvable and edible food • Gidi Karuch, CEO of Leket Israel Report Initiative: Corona Crisis "Show even more the importance of the state's recognition of food rescue, which can provide a full solution for the millions of food insecure citizens in Israel."

Families in Israel threw food worth NIS 9 billion in the trash in 2020, according to the National Report for the Loss and Rescue of Food, by the "Leket Israel" organization for food rescue.

According to the report, the sixth in a row, this is an increase of NIS 800 million compared to 2019. On the other hand, in the institutional consumption segment, there was a decrease of about 50,000 tons of food worth about NIS 2.2 billion, which reflects a 50% decrease in food loss compared to 2019. The organization attributes the decline to Corona, due to changes in consumption habits: an increase in the volume of online purchases, a decline in the volume of purchases in open markets, and a shift from food consumption in the closed institutional segment to home consumption, where the public spent most of its time during 2020.

In the retail segment, food loss amounted to NIS 4.3 billion.

In the retail chains, it stood at about 420,000 tons in 2020, which is a decrease of about 4% compared to 2019. This is due to the transition from purchasing in open markets, which are characterized by high loss rates, to online purchasing, which is characterized by low loss rates.

In the agricultural segment, there was an increase of about 20,000 tons in food loss in 2020, to 640,000 tons of agricultural produce worth NIS 2.6 billion - an increase of about 3% in quantitative loss compared to 2019.

The total food loss in Israel was 2.5 million tons worth NIS 19.1 billion, which is about NIS 615 per month in every household in Israel.

About 50% of all lost food - 1.1 million tons, worth about NIS 6.4 billion - is edible salable food.

In monetary values: about 21% of the loss value, which constitutes about NIS 4 billion, is already in the production stages, which is worth about 13% of the total value of agricultural output in Israel.

The remaining 79% of the loss, worth about NIS 15.1 billion, is in the distribution and consumption stages of retail.

Gidi Karuch, CEO of Leket Israel: "The findings of the National Report on Food Loss and Rescue demonstrate the helplessness of Israeli governments in dealing with the issue. To the millions of food insecure citizens in Israel, and to the tens of thousands who have joined them.

"The great advantage of saving food is its ability not only to close the entire food insecurity gap in Israel by a quarter of the budget, but also its ability to streamline and prevent waste of natural resources and production, help reduce emissions and pollutants and strengthen the global climate crisis." "The Prime Minister's Office must lead and promote the preparation of an inter-ministerial plan to promote the field of food rescue, so that it will holistically express the many benefits of food rescue."
