After Christmas, tens of thousands of Munich residents storm the ski slopes.
“We are now increasingly treating injuries suffered by recreational skiers in Munich - especially knee injuries.
In addition to torn cruciate ligament, fractures of the tibial head are increasing dramatically, ”warns Dr.
Manuel Koehne.
In tz and Münchner Merkur, the team doctor of the German ski aces analyzes the mistakes that lead to serious leisure accidents.
The increasing number of tibia head fractures is related to carving skis.
Dr.
Manuel Köhne from Orthopedic Surgery Munich (OCM)
Dramatic increase in tibial head fractures
He operates on ski stars from Germany and Austria, including Kitzbühel winner Thomas Dreßen - but hundreds of recreational skiers also end up on Dr. Manuel Köhne, the senior team doctor for the German alpine ski aces and knee specialist at the Munich Specialist Center for Orthopedic Surgery Munich (OCM). “It is noticeable that half of all knee injuries in women currently affect the knee. And then about a third of them are cruciate ligament injuries. In addition, there are meniscus, collateral ligament and cartilage injuries and more and more tibial head fractures. These are directly related to the carving skis, ”reports Köhne. “With the carvers, amateur skiers can easily drive high speeds. The bone on the outside of the tibia head is soft. With certain rotations and movements, the knee is compressed and the head of the tibia then breaks. These injuries are increasing dramatically, especially in recreational sports. "
Hypothermic muscles are underestimated
The accidents are often due to similar errors.
Few of them warm up before they tackle the first descent.
“No matter how expensive and good the ski suit is, the muscles are always hypothermic, especially at the beginning of the day of skiing.
And cold muscles are simply not available.
Not only that the muscle could injure itself, but it cannot work and cannot support the joints and ligaments, ”explains Köhne.
Especially with women, the bond is often set too tight
Many Brettl fans already take unnecessary risks with the equipment.
“With women, the bond is often set too tight.
This increases the risk of knee injuries in the event of a fall, ”says Köhne.
“The ski boots also have to fit.
Anyone who is out and about in the field should definitely wear a back protector.
And a ski helmet is an absolute must anyway before you even make your first turn. "
Every fifth ski accident happens in a collision
An extreme danger comes from excessive speed, warns Köhne.
“You have never seen so many untrained and inexperienced skiers traveling at very high speeds.
The new skis are definitely the reason why collision accidents are so increasing.
20 percent of all accidents have to do with a collision - with another skier, some kind of sign or with a tree next to the slope.
The new material makes it easy to learn very quickly and then be on the move very quickly. "
When most accidents happen
In addition, many skiers overestimate their physical fitness.
"Besides the first trip in the morning, most things actually happen between 3pm and 4pm," says Köhne.
“Many are already very tired.
The slopes are overcrowded because everyone wants and has to go down.
Nobody can tell me that after six or seven hours on the slopes they still have the same strength as they did in the morning.
The muscle is then already tired.
In addition, the concentration begins to decrease.
This is the classic.
Many of these accidents could be avoided. "
