A teenager aboard a cruise ship plunged to his death last week in an incident that is being investigated by Miami-Dade police.

So far, no criminal act has been suspected, said Miami-Dade Police Detective Chris Thomas.

The fatal incident occurred last Wednesday around 7:30 pm ET on board MSC Seashore as it was returning from a five-day trip to the Caribbean, said MSC Cruises, the line that manages the ship.

The company did not identify the teenager, only

described him as a young man who was traveling with his family

and indicated in a statement that "he appears to have died by suicide."

"Our team immediately notified the authorities and cared for the family of the young man on board," he explained.

“Everyone at MSC Cruises is devastated.

The family remains in our thoughts and prayers, "he added.

Following the incident, some passengers posted chaotic videos on social media

in which

the “man overboard” alert is heard

on the loudspeaker

, although the police assured that their investigation later revealed that the death occurred on the boat.
