It means saying goodbye to a great Altomünster personality, because Jakob Maier died on Christmas Eve at the age of 88.

On Tuesday, January 4th, the funeral service will take place for him at 10 a.m. in the parish church of St. Alto.

Then the funeral is at the cemetery.

Altomünster

- The “Maierbräu- Jackl”, as the deceased was called everywhere in the market and far beyond, was born into the Maier family as the first of five children.

After attending the Freising grammar school, where he also graduated from high school, he studied brewing in Weihenstephan and learned his craft from scratch.

He then took over the brewery from his father, enlarged it, expanded it and ensured that the company was always sustainable.

After all, the “Maierbräu” has been a medium-sized brewery in the town for almost 140 years, and it has made a good name for itself in a wide area.

But Jakob Maier not only saw his family business, but above all the people who stand behind it, and last but not least, the satisfied customers. You could always feel that he is fully behind what he does and that he likes to be around people and in society. So he could not be absent from the regulars' table in the brewery inn almost to the end - and he was a very valued but also a critical participant in the discussion.

Maier was a die-hard CSU member, and you could hear him rumbling quite a bit when those responsible in municipalities and the state did not do what he would have thought sensible. But he wasn't resentful either. That's why he was very popular in the town. Everyone liked to exchange a few words when they met him on the street. Jakob Maier made no difference whether this was a simple citizen, a young person or a higher-ranking personality. He never took off, but always remained very down-to-earth.

So it was no wonder that he loved the clubs and promoted them and especially the youth without a fuss wherever he could. He himself was an enthusiastic athlete in his younger years and was a multiple champion in his Freising years. Traveling, playing tennis and, last but not least, skiing were and remained his hobbies well into his old age. And there's one more area he's been working on recently: digital media.

But all of his life and work would not have made sense if his wife Maria had not been at his side.

For 62 years they were allowed to share joys and sorrows.

And that too: that their marriage unfortunately remained childless.

But in their nephew Christoph they had found an equal successor who has been with the brewery for 33 years and who has also been in charge of the “Maierbräu” for a long time.

For the whole family, Jakob Maier's foreseeable but now rapid death is a bitter loss that is difficult to cope with.

He was granted the chance to see his wife Maria's 90th birthday last week.

Just the knowledge that he was allowed to sleep peacefully and that many Altomünsterers mourn, can now convey something comforting.

The market town itself will also mourn its citizen medal bearer.

Jakob Maier received the award in 2003 because of his multiple social, sporting and cultural support.
