Mystery: Is Spider-Man good for Jews? | Israel today

2021-12-28T16:10:58.061Z

As if all the direct and indirect hints in the superhero's films and other products that testify to his connection to Judaism are not enough, some of the creators also admit: "Peter Parker is probably a Jew"

The new movie "Spider-Man: There's No Way Home" from Marvel and Sony smashes box office with revenues of more than $ 1 billion in 12 days, very surprising numbers for the Corona period.

But this is not the only surprise of this excellent film, which raises the question - is Spider-Man at all a Jew?

A tweet posted about a week ago by Rabbi David Beshavkin about the superhero's connection to Judaism went viral and created a wave of tweets from surfers who joined the celebration and pointed to references with a Jewish motif in the new film and its predecessors.

We have collected the most prominent of them.

  • In the new film you can see in the background the Belfer Hall from Yeshiva University, the famous private Jewish university founded in 1886.

  • A guy with a skullcap appears in the background in a Betty Burnett journalistic report.

Later in the film you can also notice

  • Marvel has released a new app in parallel with the rise of the film that allows anyone who uses it to see the content on Peter Parker's smartphone.

The first Brill from which you can see a newsstand.

In addition to the covers of In Touch Weekly and Time starring Spider-Man, you can also see a copy of "De Forwood" (Forverts in Yiddish) the American Jewish newspaper published in New York, with the caption in Yiddish: "Is it good for Jews?"

    (Is this good for Jews?).

  • In the fictitious high school corridors of Peter Parker in the film, one can notice orthodox religious students in traditional attire that also includes a dome and wigs for life.

This is of course an unrealistic scenario, since in a real public high school, you are unlikely to find Orthodox students.

  • An ultra-Orthodox Jew was seen walking the streets of Queens, New York, outside Peter Parker's favorite store.

  • Hassidic Jews are also seen in the scene on the subway.

  • In the movie "Spider-Man 3" starring Toby Maguire, he is filmed in one of the scenes with a group of children.

One of them is a religious Jewish boy.

  • Andrew Garfield, who played the character of the superhero in films released at the beginning of the previous decade, claimed in a 2014 interview that "Peter Parker is not a simple guy" and that "he is certainly a Jew."

    He is certainly a Jew.

  • Alan Ruskin, who was one of the developers of the "Spider-Man" game for the PlayStation 4, revealed that there are characters who do not appear on Shabbat because they keep Shabbat.

In a Twitter tweet, a senior at Marvel Studios said that Orthodox figures appearing in the game will not be seen in front of the games on the seventh day.

"These guys don't work on Saturday," he confirmed.

  • If you were wondering why there are quite a few mentions and guest appearances with a Jewish tone in the Spider-Man film series, Rodney Rothman, one of the directors of the superhero films, has provided some kind of explanation in the past.

"I have a strong and stubborn personal belief for many reasons because Peter Parker is probably Jewish. I myself grew up in Forest Hills in Queens and I am Jewish so maybe I'm throwing myself away," he said.
