More time at home and more problems: The number of cases of domestic violence increased in Bavaria in 2020, as the White Ring and the State Criminal Police Office confirm.

Victims are not only women, but often children - even when they witness violence in the family environment.

Munich - Bad realization in the pandemic: Domestic violence increased in the first year of the corona pandemic in the Free State.

"We see a clear increase," says Jörg Ziercke from the White Ring.

This was erratic "especially after the lockdowns in 2020 and 2021".

According to an analysis by the State Criminal Police Office, there were 20 234 cases in Bavaria in 2020, 2998 of them in Munich.

Those affected by intimate partner violence are more likely to report mild to severe physical abuse - and above all more often massive psychological violence.

These included humiliation and psychological terror, which often resulted in death threats or threats against children.

Munich: The proportion of male violent criminals increases to 90 percent

The proportion of male suspects has increased by ten percent compared to 2019 to 90 percent. This shows that the willingness of men to use violence in partnerships with children increased visibly in the first year of the pandemic. With reference to an unreported study, the State Criminal Police Office came to the conclusion that the risk of violence against women and children increased, especially during the exit restrictions caused by the pandemic. The reasons for this are insecure childcare, fear of job loss and the associated financial worries. All of this leads to a high multiple burden, which in turn reinforces violent structures. At the same time, those seeking help rarely turned to the advice centers during the lockdown phase - except in extreme situations.

According to the Weißes Ring, a pandemic effect is also evident on the nationwide victim telephone: The inquiries rose significantly in 2020 and 2021;

Currently, the 75 employees conduct an average of 1822 conversations per month - around 300 more than in 2019. For the 49 employees of the online advice service, the number of advice inquiries actually doubled: there were 3352 advice seekers last year.

Domestic violence: The infants were present in 8,000 cases

Domestic violence cases now make up almost a fifth of all victim cases processed at the White Ring. But not every victim can ask for help. According to the State Office of Criminal Investigation, children were present in 8,000 cases across Bavaria when there was violence between parents. In Munich the number is 1428. “That is one of the saddest topics,” says psychologist Carmen Osten, who has been working at the Munich Child Protection Center for 30 years. Because the world of children, supported by family security, shatters in such situations. Children are often severely impaired in their emotional development. "Experiences of violence are one of the most damaging factors," said Osten.

Violence counts not only when children are beaten themselves - but also when they are neglected or witnessed violence.

According to the State Office of Criminal Investigation, two thirds of those under two are affected, as are a good every second child aged two and over.

Months of stress at home - psychologists warn of "escalating relationship situations"

Carmen Osten also confirms a fundamental increase in violence in the pandemic.

Financial problems, quarantine, cramped living conditions: "When the stressors increase, fear and anger also increase." She describes it as "impulsive breakthroughs" when the violence in the stress then discharges.

Experts warn of an "escalating relationship situation": when parents are about to split up and stress in families arises for months.

For many people, the pandemic also means that nothing can be done about the current situation or the stress.

“It's about enduring,” says Osten.

“But many are stressed anyway.” Anyone looking for help can get it in advice centers.

“We still offer support,” it is said in many places.
