Following reports from passers-by, police arrived at the scene and arrested the couple.
The media reports that the man was not the children's father and that the 28-year-old mother had only known him a few days before.

The plaintiff in the couple's case, Gabriella Matteo, noted that the man is not exempt from liability and will be charged with abandoning a minor along with the children’s mother.
Meteo noted that the couple may face additional charges, such as vandalizing minors and even sexual abuse.
The plaintiff added that the two children were transferred to the care of the authorities to protect their "physical and mental integrity" and that their health was in good condition.
