The harvest of sugar cane, the

in 2021 only reached 800,000 tonnes, well below the government target of 1.2 million tonnes.

Far from the eight to ten million tonnes of the 1960s or 1970s, when the USSR bought Cuban sugar without counting at preferential rates, in exchange for oil, production goods and a strategic presence on the island.
If, before the revolution, sugar represented around 80% of Cuba's exports, today it weighs only around 10% and contributes less than 1% of the GDP.
