The crew quarantine is tightened. The government will soon require that the crew members who arrive in Hong Kong must stay in a quarantine hotel for the first three days before returning home for surveillance to reduce risks.
Zeng Qiyin, co-chair of the Infectious Disease Advisory Committee of the Medical Association, said on the Hong Kong and Taiwan program "Millennium" today (29) that the new measures are helpful and are "a good starting point."
Although I do not approve of home quarantine, I believe that the government and airlines have communication, and the new measures can balance epidemic prevention and industry needs.
However, he pointed out that the government needs to add legal penalties and review other arrangements that can reduce crew members’ participation in the community.

Zeng Qiyin, the co-chair of the Infectious Disease Advisory Committee of the Medical Association, pointed out that the new arrangement is reasonable for the community and the crew. Although the government should implement it earlier, it is still a good starting point.
He pointed out that the incubation period of the variant virus strain Omicron is 3 to 5 days. Arranging crew members to stay in a quarantine hotel for the first 3 days can prevent the case from entering the community. I believe that the government and airlines have communication and compromise; and the crew members need to guard after 3 days. Rules, avoid going to multi-person events or shopping malls, etc.
He pointed out that although he does not approve of home quarantine because it will affect other people, the new arrangement can balance the epidemic prevention requirements and the staffing arrangements of airlines. If there are more cases in the future, I believe the government will adjust it again.
He suggested that the Transportation and Housing Bureau could take this opportunity to request airlines to hire more manpower to prepare enough pilots to cope with the arrangements.
However, he pointed out that if the crew violates the regulations, the airline is mainly responsible. He believes that the government needs to consider adding legal penalties and review other arrangements that can reduce the crew's entry into the community, including sending people to the door for testing and providing daily necessities.
He pointed out that since Hong Kong is a highly dense city with a large number of people in transportation and shopping malls, it is believed that if the mutant virus strain Omicron enters the community and the fifth wave breaks out, the virus will spread rapidly in the community.
