After the Corona lockdown at the turn of 2020/21, New Year's Eve will more or less be canceled this year as well.

Because of the impending omicron wave, fireworks are prohibited in public places.

Big parties are not allowed.

How are the rules controlled?

Düsseldorf - A year ago the streets were swept empty because of the lockdown, and the upcoming New Year's Eve festival will largely fall victim to the strict Corona rules in North Rhine-Westphalia. With the entry into force of the restrictions also for vaccinated and convalescent people on Tuesday (December 28th), meetings with more than ten people are not allowed indoors or outdoors. The rules for unvaccinated people are even stricter. You can meet a maximum of two people from another household. The sale of firecrackers and fireworks is prohibited nationwide.

Big parties in crowded squares and streets can just as little take place in NRW as in the private sector. Public dance events are prohibited, clubs and discos remain closed. So people will meet in a small group at home on New Year's Eve, watch the traditional "Dinner for one", eat comfortably, play something and toast a (hopefully) better year with less Corona at midnight. Christmas crackers and sparklers are booming right now, and maybe the traditional lead pouring of figures will make a big splash again.

The state's current Corona Protection Ordinance says: "At the turn of the year 2021/2022, publicly held fireworks and any use of pyrotechnics in public places and streets to be specified by the responsible authorities by general decree are prohibited." There is a general ban on popping although not. At the same time, the cities appeal to citizens to refrain from New Year's Eve fireworks as much as possible and thus to prevent accidents and an increased burden on the emergency clinics.

NRW Health Minister Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU) warned against getting fireworks, which may not even be allowed in Germany, via detours abroad or via the Internet. There are two reasons for the ban on fireworks and pyrotechnics in certain public areas. “First of all, in the current situation, it is important to avoid large gatherings of people in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus. And secondly, the aim is to prevent injuries in connection with fireworks from putting additional strain on the health system, ”said Laumann of the“ Rheinische Post ”(Wednesday).

The state capital announced that the fireworks ban in Düsseldorf will apply from December 31 (8:00 p.m.) to January 1, 2022 (6:00 a.m.). During this time it is forbidden to “bring fireworks with you or even to ignite” in the public streets of the old town. The regulatory office will significantly increase the number of its emergency services at the turn of the year. The police will support the security forces with the controls.

Cologne, the largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia, has more than 20 public areas that are considered "New Year's Eve hotspots" and where the ban on fireworks and gatherings applies from December 31, 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. on New Year's morning.

These include the Rhine bridges and the old town.

"The city of Cologne calls for fireworks to be dispensed with even in places where burning would be permitted in public spaces," said the cathedral city's website.

The city's security and traffic service, as well as the police, will be on duty to enforce the applicable rules.

New Year's Eve fireworks 2021 banned in many inner cities

Cities and municipalities must name the public squares and streets where the ignition of pyrotechnics is prohibited.

“With the“ firecrackers ban ”, the city wants to contribute to the fact that as few people as possible gather in central places, are injured by New Year's fireworks and have to be cared for in one of the clinics.

The hospitals are already heavily used to care for corona patients, "it says in Bochum.

Many test and vaccination offers are to be maintained through the turn of the year in order to counter the omicron wave.

The respective locations and opening times are published on the homepages of the cities and districts.
