Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have agreed to hold joint military exercises on Belarusian territory, following their face-to-face meeting in St. Petersburg on Wednesday.

Lukashenko thanked Putin for his support during the tough year of sanctions and the pandemic and promised that Belarus would not remain in debt to the Russians, offering cooperation in the military sector.

  • Who is Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Belarus who has been described as "the last dictator of Europe"?

“I am personally very grateful to him, first of all, for what he did for Belarus.

And for the support they give us ... supporting us in this difficult moment of sanctions, "Lukashenko told Putin.

“[Western countries] keep strangling us.

They have already introduced five [sanctions] packages and he is talking about the sixth.

These sanctions are stupid and useless, "Lukashenko added in televised comments.

Belarus owes its GDP growth in the year of sanctions and the pandemic to Russia largely and in part to its "international friends," Lukashenko said, adding that Belarusians will not remain indebted to Russia.

Lukashenko suggested holding joint military exercises on the territory of Belarus, saying that relations between the two countries would benefit from it.

“As you suggested, we will hold [military exercises] at the beginning of the year.

The military will agree on the dates: in March, February, I don't know when they will decide to hold them, "Putin replied.
