Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends and Valorant games, announced this week that it has signed a settlement agreement in a class action lawsuit filed against it back in 2018 by company employees represented by California state authorities, for sexual harassment and gender discrimination. As part of the same agreement, Riot will pay about $ 80 million in compensation to about 2,500 past and present employees of the company for gender discrimination, sexual harassment and encouraging a toxic work environment, in addition to another $ 20 million for various legal expenses.

The affair began in 2018 when an investigation by gaming site Kotaku revealed the conduct and atmosphere in Riot offices, which promoted an atmosphere of sexism and sexual harassment, in addition to a “male brotherhood” culture that encouraged gender discrimination. A year after the affair was published in 2019, Riot reached a compromise with some of the same facts that sued the company and compensated them with ten million dollars,But it was the Department of Housing and Fair Employment in the state of California that claimed the plaintiffs deserved much larger compensation - $ 400 million.

This is not the first case in the industry where it has been revealed that a gaming company is behaving disgracefully towards its facts: Blizzard and Ubisoft executives have also faced similar allegations in recent months, and the bubble in the industry seems to be slowly shattering as we are exposed to change. The dirty laundry and they have to deal with the consequences.
