Wood or sheet metal - that is the question when it comes to the Pilate House.

The roof of the striking building in Oberammergau needs to be replaced.

Oberammergau - The Oberammergau Pilatushaus is almost 400 years old. At least the building on Ludwig-Thoma-Straße appears in files for the first time in 1722. It has seen a lot, for example burned down in 1774 and was rebuilt, ten years later Franz Seraph Zwink immortalized himself with his frescoes. Since 1970 it has belonged to the municipality, which repeatedly pays money to renovate or convert the property. Now she has to invest again in the striking building that houses the town hall administration. The roof causes problems.

The wooden shingles are broken.

“Quite ailing”, judges the building authority employee Ursula Mayr.

“It's really wet in there.” The damage was therefore temporarily repaired.

The roof can even withstand large amounts of snow or rain.

“Nothing can happen there,” says manager Bernd Sedlmaier when asked by the daily newspaper, giving the all-clear.

But in the near future it will simply have to be renewed.

Sheet metal would be cheaper and more durable

Mayr had informed the finance committee about the upcoming repair.

Finally, the budgeted budget for 2022 added the calculated funds of 250,000 euros.

It has yet to be clarified whether the measure will be funded.

The same applies to the question of materials.

Mayr would prefer sheet metal because it is more durable and cheaper.

She roughly estimates that the cost difference is around 50,000 euros.

According to her, that doesn't seem like that much at first glance, but you have to take the shelf life into account.

"Otherwise it'll come back in 20 years." Your opinion.

But that is not the decisive factor.

The State Office for Monument Protection will decide which material is used.

In any case, the approach in the household relates to wood.

Work planned in 2022

The building authority employee has taken the trouble and researched.

She inspected old photos of the Pilatushaus.

Very old pictures showing wooden shingles, not quite so old showing a tin roof.

Since the 1980s - at that time the building was renovated, rebuilt and restored at enormous expense - wood has adorned the building in the center of the village, which is very popular with tourists as a photo motif.

When exactly the work will go on is still open.

The schedule depends on the talks with the monument protection and the community committees, on the tender and the deadline of the respective company, explains Sedlmaier.

But 2022 is realistic.
