2021-12-30T11:40:09.476Z

The Haredi Institute for Policy Studies reveals that an Haredi business owner earns about 55 percent less than his non-Haredi counterpart • One of the reasons: Lack of awareness of knowledge gaps • Research authors: "In order to maintain a strong economy we need a strong and diverse business sector"

There is a 55 percent gap between the income of non-Haredi business owners and the income of Haredi business owners, and the latter employ a smaller number of employees, according to a study conducted by the Haredi Institute for Policy Studies.

At a conference held this week on "Challenges and opportunities for the self-employed and ultra-Orthodox businesses in the State of Israel," the institute's staff examined the situation of ultra-Orthodox business owners, among other things through a survey of about 400 business owners.

The study shows that ultra-Orthodox business owners will almost certainly earn much less than parallel non-ultra-Orthodox business owners.

They also usually run a smaller business, with fewer employees.

In addition, it appears that there are three main characteristics of the main difficulties and challenges of an ultra-Orthodox business owner: lack of awareness of the complexity of running a business and the importance of receiving external help, lack of motivation for growth and lack of soft knowledge, skills and abilities.

The ultra-Orthodox businesses are not aware that they have knowledge gaps and moreover, they are satisfied with their salary and their business and do not see the need to upgrade them.

The study presents a holistic solution that combines both the provision of the required knowledge and tools and the raising of motivation to acquire these skills, say the institute.

The Haredi Institute for Policy Studies calls for investing in Haredi business owners.

According to them, investing in self-employed and ultra-Orthodox business owners will contribute not only to reducing wage gaps and increasing productivity, but to increasing the number of jobs for ultra-Orthodox.

Due to this, the institute aims to formulate a proposal for the development of data-based programs for the promotion of entrepreneurship and business in the ultra-Orthodox society, while emphasizing the setting of goals and milestones for policy makers.

"The issue of small and medium-sized and independent businesses is a macroeconomic issue of great importance to ultra-Orthodox society and the State of Israel as a whole," explains Roi Cohen, director of the Haredi Institute for Policy Studies. , Small and medium-sized businesses.

The ultra-Orthodox society also needs a strong backbone of business owners.

Therefore, in order to remove the barriers, systemic evidence is required that will be possible only through the creation of a policy tailored to the ultra-Orthodox business owners and in accordance with the unique cultural characteristics of the ultra-Orthodox society. "

"Through a targeted response to the unique barriers of business owners in the ultra-Orthodox society, from raising awareness of the importance of acquiring skills and skills for running a business, increasing motivation for growth to creating targeted training, the gaps will be significantly reduced," says Cohen.
