Galein Maxwell, the ex-partner of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, has been convicted of aiding Epstein sexually abusing young girls - a court in Manhattan ruled Thursday night.

Maxwell, who was described as the "lady of the house" who helped "normalize" the sexual exploitation of those girls, was convicted by a 12-man jury, on five of the six charges against her, including the most serious charge of sex trafficking in a minor.

The offenses attributed to British Maxwell were allegedly committed from 1994 to 2004.

Maxwell, the 60-year-old daughter of British journalist Robert Maxwell, could spend the rest of her life behind bars.

Conspiracy to commit sex trafficking in minors carries a maximum penalty of 40 years.

Another section carries a potential sentence of ten years imprisonment, and for the other three, all conspiracy clauses, penalties of up to five years each.

Judge Allison Nathan did not set a date for Maxwell's sentence.

Four women who were victims of Epstein testified in the trial against her and told how she took advantage of their situation.

The four of them were young girls at the time of the acts.

New York Southern District Attorney Damian Williams said "the road to justice has been too long. But today justice has been done. I want to commend the courage of the girls - now mature women - who came out of the shadows and entered the courtroom."

One of Maxwell's attorneys, Bobby Sternheim, said outside court: "We firmly believe in Galein's innocence. We are clearly very disappointed with the verdict. We have already started working on the appeal and we are confident she will win."

Maxwell is also facing a separate trial, in the same court, on two counts of perjury, stemming from statements she made in 2016 in an Epstein-related lawsuit.
