Did the temperature seem out of season when you woke up?
It wasn't just an impression.
It is unusually hot these days in France for the end of December.
Over a very large part of the country, temperatures were well above 10 ° C at dawn on Thursday morning.
In Paris, for example, it was over 15 ° C at 7 a.m. in the city center, 14 ° C at the official Météo France reference station.
These are values that can correspond to a summer night that is neither too hot nor too cool.
🌡 Many cities in northern France have broken their records for #night softness for the month of December!
This is the case in #Lille, #Metz, # Besançon or even #Beauvais, to name just a few examples ... 📈 pic.twitter.com/2XoIBOH8P4

Since the temperature finally dropped a little above 13 ° C a little later, the record for the mildest night in December was not broken in the capital.
It dates back to December 11, 1961, recalls the meteorologist Guillaume Séchet.
Other cities have crossed the record line for a night in December.
This is for example the case of Lille (North) and Beauvais (Oise).
Return to normal in the middle of next week
The reason for these levels is a mass of hot air which is stagnating over France.
As this map from The Weather Channel shows, temperatures are reaching mid-spring values.
The warmth is needed in France, even if the weather remains gloomy and rainy.
But, with the return of the sun from the south over the next few days, the atmosphere will often be springtime.

Météo France explains that they rise to heights of "8 ° C to 13 ° C above normal for minimums, and 5 ° C to 10 ° C above normal for maximum".
This resulted in numerous temperature records on Wednesday.
This table provided by Météociel summarizes a number of them.
The 20 ° C mark was clearly exceeded in places.

This Thursday afternoon, the situation will be the same.
If the sky will remain mostly cloudy in the north of the country, it will nevertheless be around fifteen degrees.
The 20 ° C will once again be reached, or even exceeded locally in the south of France.
In Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales), a maximum of around 22 ° C is thus expected.

The situation will continue until the end of the week.
For the beginning of the year 2022, from Monday and Tuesday, the temperatures will gradually decrease.
Next Wednesday, temperatures will return to the season and, compared to the current week, it will be around ten degrees cooler.
