A terrible incident occurred in the Netherlands on New Year's Eve.

A twelve year old boy was killed in an explosion.

Haaksbergen - Bad news before New Year's Eve really started: In the Netherlands, a twelve-year-old boy was killed by a New Year's Eve bang.

Another boy was seriously injured and taken to hospital after the incident in Haaksbergen near the German border.

The police announced on Friday on Twitter.

According to the police, the two children had not handled the fireworks themselves.

According to the broadcaster NOS, they watched a man detonate him with a self-made so-called "Klaphamer" powder.

The police arrested a man and started an investigation.

In the Netherlands, just like in Germany, there is actually a nationwide ban on firecrackers on New Year's Eve.

The government had imposed the ban for the second year in a row so as not to put additional strain on hospitals in the corona pandemic.

In 2019, more than 1,300 people had to be treated for injuries from fireworks.

In 2020, the number fell by 70 percent as a result of the ban.
