NEW - Designer turned builder, Danish Henrik Fisker dreams of competing with Tesla. Launched at the end of 2022, its electric SUV has serious arguments.

Original designer Henrik Fisker has not given up on producing electric cars.

We remember that he embarked on the adventure in the second part of the 2000s after having met the refusal of the manufacturers whom he asked to develop a luxury electric sedan.

It was therefore on his own and with the help of investors that he succeeded in seducing this somewhat opportunistic pioneer to design the Karma, a large zero-emission sedan.

At the dawn of the 2010s, the market was not yet ripe and Fisker took the plaster.

In bankruptcy, his company is taken over by the Chinese.

Not a reason to give up.

While relaunching a design activity, Fisker has not given up on the idea of entering the electric market.

He succeeded again in raising funds.

Investors are easier to convince: the booming electric car has a bright future.

At the last Los Angeles show, Fisker, based in the United States, presented its new electric vehicle.

Called Ocean, this model will enter the SUV market at the end of 2022.

The man who designed the BMW Z8 and the Aston Martin DB9 and V8 Vantage has lost none of his talent.

Around a length of 4.77 m, a width of 1.99 m and a height of 1.62 m, the lines of the Ocean refresh the guns of the genre with an original modeling of shapes, a High beltline, a low glass surface and the rear window opening which adds dynamism to the silhouette.

The Ocean lives up to its name: with the push of a button, all glass surfaces, including the rear window and panoramic roof, can be opened to let in air.

The roof will also be able to accommodate photovoltaic panels making it possible to gain nearly 3,000 km per year of autonomy provided you reside in a sunny region.

The treatment of the very refined interior refers to the Tesla architecture with the large 17.1-inch vertical shelf located in the center of the board.

However, it has the originality of tilting horizontally when stationary to switch to "Hollywood" mode and watch a movie or a show.

In its desire to drastically reduce the carbon footprint, Fisker uses recycled materials based on fishing nets, old T-shirts and rubber waste for the interior coverings.

The aluminum sandwich frame is covered with a skin of steel and composite materials. The battery pack developed by the equipment manufacturer CATL is housed in the floor, between the two multi-link axles. Depending on the version, the Ocean uses different battery technologies. Entry-level model, the Sport accommodates a 275 horsepower engine at the front. It is powered by a battery with a chemistry based on phosphate, iron and lithium. Two other four-wheel drive models - Ultra and Extreme - receive a nickel, manganese and cobalt battery. These two versions deliver 540 and more than 550 horsepower respectively. 100 km / h is reached in 4.2 and 3.9 seconds. The manufacturer announces ranges of between 440 km for the entry-level model and 630 km for the Extreme version. At this stage, the capacity of the batteries was not disclosed. The production of the Ocean will be handled by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, which is a guarantee of quality. The Taiwanese Foxconn, Apple's first subcontractor, will for its part ensure the production of the vehicle for the American market.

Another major asset for this new vehicle: its ultra-competitive price compared to the competition.

The entry-level version is priced at € 41,900, the two-engine versions at € 57,500 and € 69,950.
