The UN Security Council unanimously renewed yesterday evening, for a period of four years, the mandate of its Counter-Terrorism Committee, a body that was established at the end of 2001 after the September 11 attacks.

And AFP quoted the council as saying in a statement, “It decided in a virtual meeting that the Executive Department of the Counter-Terrorism Committee would retain its status as a special political mission until December 31, 2025.”

This renewal was conditional on the issuance of progress reports in March and December of 2022 and 2023 by virtue of a resolution adopted by the Security Council, which is the last text to be adopted this year.

The Counter-Terrorism Committee was established in which the 15 member states of the Security Council are represented after the attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States and includes about forty officials, most of whom are legal experts.
