Britain recorded today the highest temperature ever on the first day of the new year, as it reached 16.2 degrees Celsius in the capital, London.

And AFP quoted the British Met Office as saying that 16.2 degrees Celsius was recorded in St James' Park, central London, and attributed this to warm subtropical winds from the Azores.

Yesterday, the United Kingdom recorded the highest temperature on New Year's Eve, with 15.8 degrees Celsius during the day in Somerset, southwest of England, and up to 16.5 degrees Celsius in the evening in Bala in North Wales.

The previous record for the hottest New Year's Day temperature was set in 1916 with 15.6°C in Cornwall.

The UK has experienced slightly above average heat and drought levels this year, with variations across the country.
