ANALYSIS - Referring to the presidential election of April 2022, the Head of State does not even imagine that a woman can access the Élysée.


In his greetings to the French on New Year's Eve, the President of the Republic has, as expected, mentioned the electoral deadlines of spring 2022. Nothing more normal in substance, but the chosen form is much less banal.

"

2022 will be an election year, finally (sic)

", he explained first of all, going directly with these words: "

We will have to elect the President of the Republic next spring, then to appoint our representatives in the National Assembly

”.

Let’s move quickly to the singular of “

election

” as it appears in the text which was released to the press a few minutes after the 8 pm televised address.

We expected a plural, which is confirmed by the second sentence.

Election in the singular indeed means choice, as if the Head of State meant that 2022 will be a “

year of choice

” in the sense of a very particular flavor.

No one will say the opposite!

More surprising is the formula "

elect the President of the Republic

".
