Iran today called on the United Nations to issue a resolution condemning the perpetrators of the assassination of the martyr Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Quds Force in the Revolutionary Guards, stressing that failure to punish them and grant them immunity constitutes a threat to international peace.
The Iranian news agency IRNA reported that the legal affairs assistant to the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran sent a memorandum to the President of the United Nations General Assembly, requesting the issuance of a condemnation resolution for the perpetrators of the assassination of Soleimani, and included an affirmation that granting immunity to the perpetrators of the assassinations of government and diplomatic figures threatens international peace.
The memorandum indicated that US President Donald Trump at the time acknowledged the responsibility for initiating this brutal crime, indicating that this dangerous action by the US administration contradicts the Charter of the United Nations as the main document and the rope of international accord in the post-World War II era, which prevents countries from doing any Action against international peace and security.
In its memo, Iran called on the United Nations to harness all legal initiatives stipulated within its powers, including issuing decisions condemning the state's crimes represented in assassinations against government officials and diplomats, in a way that contributes to limiting the commission of these crimes in the future.
The memorandum concluded by saying that the failure to punish the perpetrators and those involved in the assassination crimes and their immunity before the judiciary and judicial accountability impede the course of international peace more than ever before.
It is noteworthy that Soleimani was martyred with the deputy head of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, and a number of their companions on January 3, 2020, as a result of an aggression carried out by the American aircraft in the vicinity of Baghdad International Airport.
