Weyarn
- A couple from Munich started the new year on Saturday with a shock.
As reported by the Holzkirchen autobahn police, his car caught fire on the autobahn.
The 40-year-old driver and his co-driver were on the way home to Munich on the A8 when they suddenly noticed a burning smell from the ventilation shortly after 3 p.m.
Shortly after the Seehamer See parking lot, the driver was able to safely stop his Renault on the hard shoulder when flames broke out from the engine compartment.
Elaborate clean-up work: Locked for three hours
The two occupants were able to save themselves from the car in time.
The Weyarn fire brigade, which was immediately alerted, was only able to extinguish the completely burned-out vehicle shortly afterwards, reports the police.
The property damage is estimated at around 15,000 euros.
The right and middle lanes to the north were closed for about three hours for the extinguishing and clearing work.
Some of the traffic backed up as far as Irschenberg, and there was heavy traffic on the alternative route via State Road 2073.
As the police explained when asked, the fuel in the car had also leaked during the fire, which made cleaning more time-consuming.
In this case, the motorway maintenance authority had to use a special device that had to be requested from a company.
