Nothing distinguishes the area around the Hippocrates Hospital in Thessaloniki, in northern Greece, from other hospitals overwhelmed by the new wave of Covid.
The ballet of ambulances is incessant, the atmosphere heavy, but there is nevertheless a peculiarity: the ambulances are followed by cars adorned with flags crossed by the double-headed eagle on a yellow background representing the Greek Orthodox Church.
In recent times, the hospitals of the second city of the country are welcoming more and more men and women of the Church.
Eight nuns from Panorama Monastery were placed in intensive care last weekend, two of them in critical condition.
None of them is vaccinated, on "
the order of the mother superior
".
These are not exceptional situations, but recurring and daily.
Doctors oscillate between anger and despair.
