The political situation in Sudan remains precarious.
Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok has now resigned.
Khartoum - The Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok, the civilian face of the transitional government in the north-east African country, has resigned in the face of the ongoing political crisis.
"I have tried my best to prevent the country from sliding into disaster," Hamdok said on Sunday evening in a speech televised on state television.
In view of its political division, Sudan has now passed a "dangerous turning point that threatens its survival".
The political forces in the country are divided, said Hamdok in his speech to the nation.
The struggle for a consensus between the military and civilian forces involved in the political transition had remained unsuccessful.
Sudan: Again and again protests in the country - two people died
Sudan's Supreme General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan declared a state of emergency on October 25 and deposed the government that was supposed to lead the transition to democratic elections after the overthrow of long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir in April 2019. Since then, there have been regular mass demonstrations for a return to a civilian government, against which the military is sometimes using violence *.
Two demonstrators were killed in renewed protests in the capital, Khartoum, on Sunday.
After the first mass demonstrations and international protests, al-Burhan reinstated Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok four weeks after his removal and promised the formation of a new civilian government.
This did not happen, however, and it remained unclear how much power Hamdok actually wielded.
Now the crisis state Sudan has another chapter richer.
