After Palestinian militants fired two rockets into the Mediterranean Sea early Saturday morning, the Israeli army attacked targets in Gaza.
The missiles fell into the sea off the coast of Tel Aviv, reported the Israeli military.
According to the police, the explosion did not cause any damage.
So far, no militant group has taken responsibility.
After dark, Israel attacked targets in the Gaza Strip - according to the Israeli army, a Hamas military post and a rocket construction facility.
The radio station of the radical Islamic Hamas reported that Israeli planes and tanks had attacked the group's security posts and a training camp.
Video recordings from the city of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip, which is adjacent to a large refugee camp, showed three explosions.
There were initially no reports of deaths or injuries.
Hamas has occasionally fired test missiles towards the sea in the past.
However, the Hamas-affiliated news website Paltimes reports that the shooting down was likely caused by a malfunction.
The last heavy fighting was only a few months ago: In May, Hamas fired rockets in the direction of Israel, whereupon the Israeli air force bombed targets in the Gaza Strip.
In the Gaza Strip, more than 240 people were killed during the eleven days of fighting, and twelve in Israel.
Less than a month ago, Israel completed a 65-kilometer barrier on the border with the Gaza Strip, thereby completely sealing off the Palestinian territory.
In this way, residents in the south of Israel should be better protected from attacks.
Israel strictly controls the importation of goods into the narrow coastal strip, where two million people live, and strict border crossings.
Critics of the barricade fence say the armored blockade could worsen humanitarian conditions in Gaza.
